Synopsis of the Story of KCN Television
Kreative Communication Network is the brainchild of Carlton Pickering Sr. who came to Anguilla in 1993 and saw the need for Local Television (locals seeing themselves on the Television on a regular basis) in Anguilla.
A little research was done and against the nay-sayers, who believe ‘it cannot be done,’ ‘others tried and they did not last long’. We introduce a model that no one tried before. We sought committed volunteers, and it started out from a living room.
Three Volunteers, Rosanna Browne-Harrigan (who is still with KCN presently), Dorothea Richardson and Carol Liddie. With these, a 15 – 20 minutes programme was born and aired on the 1st of October 1996 on Network Community Channel 9 (A free to air Channel managed then by Mello Sello the first).
In 1997, KCN was granted a further 30minutes, this time on All Island Cable, later changed to Caribbean Cable Communication. The late Pastor Everet Simon, who watched the programming regularly, came and volunteered his services in hosting the sports segment along with Mervin Saunders, who was another volunteer.
After the passing of Everet Simon in 2002, Saunders took over the Hosting along with Colwayne Pickering and later joined by Cardigan Connor a professional Cricketer in England, now retired returned home to Anguilla and upon viewing our programming graciously offered his time and service as being the co-host of KCN Weekend Sports discussion.
Carl Thomas who came to Anguilla in late 2006 and who had some knowledge in covering community events and reporting on sports, came and volunteered his services in that direction. There were several others who whenever time permitted, gave of their services freely.
Those mentioned above are all part of the KCN family who give of their time and energies to the growth and the development of KCN Television in Anguilla for the past 25 years.
We offer and still do in no small way:
- Treat each Volunteer Staff as a co-worker, not just as a free help.
- Give sound guidance and cater for their well being.
- Give them appropriate training where necessary. (This we do each year through the Caribbean Broadcasting Union and other Organizations)
- Let them be a part of goal setting and planning for KCN.
- Comments and opinions are well respected.
- Give them the opportunity for greater responsibilities. (When the CEO is off island, they are left in charge. Further, they oversee the Programmes which they Host and Present.)
Anguilla look forward to the Annual Award Ceremony which takes place every January or February showcasing our contributions, participation, commitment, and development to Anguilla. It is kindness shown, appreciation of their value, recognition of their worth and having given them a sense of responsibility.
